New to houses? Start with: the twelve houses

What the second house rules

Traditionally the second house covers movable property. Not land, not status, not other people's capital. The things you can carry, sell, spend, or lose: income, savings, possessions, and the skills you can charge money for.

The part that makes it interesting is that the same house also rules value. Not price. Value. What you consider worth having, worth protecting, and worth your time. Which means self-worth and net worth sit in the same room, and astrologers have been pointing at that overlap for about two thousand years.

One house, four questions. What do you earn? What do you keep? What do you think you are worth? And what do you reach for when money starts to feel personal?

This is why a second-house reading is behavioral rather than predictive. It does not describe an amount. It describes a relationship, and relationships repeat.

How to find your second house

House II uses whole-sign houses, the oldest system in Hellenistic astrology and the simplest to reason about. One sign, one house, no split cusps. That gives you a rule you can apply without a calculator:

Your second house is the sign after your rising sign. If Leo is rising, your second house is the whole sign of Virgo. Every planet in Virgo is in your second house.

You need your rising sign for this, which needs a birth time. Not an approximate one. The ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes, so a birth time that is off by two hours can hand you the wrong rising sign and therefore the wrong second house entirely. If your birth time is a guess, treat everything below as provisional.

Other house systems, Placidus among them, divide space differently and can place a planet in the first house that whole-sign puts in the second. Neither is a measurement error. They are different conventions, and this app is consistent about using one.

What the sign on it says about how you earn

The sign of your second house describes the manner of your earning and holding. Not the size of it.

SIGNHOW MONEY TENDS TO BEHAVE
AriesEarned in bursts. Comes fast when you move first, goes fast when you move without looking.
TaurusAccumulated slowly and held tightly. Comfortable with patience, allergic to being rushed.
GeminiSeveral streams, none of them tidy. Earning through words, deals, and knowing things.
CancerMoney as safety. Saved for the people you protect, spent on the place you live.
LeoEarned by being visible, spent on being seen. Generosity and pride are the same account.
VirgoEarned through competence and detail. Tracked closely, undercharged for routinely.
LibraEarned through other people, taste, and relationships. Spending is rarely solitary.
ScorpioAll or nothing, and usually private. Strong instincts about leverage, weak brakes.
SagittariusEarned in expansion and optimism. The forecast is always slightly better than the ledger.
CapricornEarned by structure and time. Late security, well built, extracted from yourself.
AquariusUnconventional income, irregular timing. Detached about money right up until it is gone.
PiscesMoney is porous. It arrives unexpectedly and leaks the same way. Boundaries are the work.

Its ruler, and where your money actually comes from

The sign on the second house has a ruling planet. Find where that planet sits in your chart and you have the more specific answer: the house it occupies is the area of life your money tends to arrive through.

SIGNRULER
Aries♂︎ Mars
Taurus, Libra♀︎ Venus
Gemini, Virgo☿︎ Mercury
Cancer Moon
Leo Sun
Scorpio♂︎ Mars, or Pluto in modern practice
Sagittarius, Pisces♃︎ Jupiter, or Neptune for Pisces in modern practice
Capricorn, Aquarius♄︎ Saturn, or Uranus for Aquarius in modern practice

A worked example. Sagittarius rising puts Capricorn on the second house. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn. If that Saturn sits in the tenth house, income is tied to career, reputation, and long structures, and it will feel slow before it feels safe. If the same Saturn sits in the seventh, money is tied to partnership and contracts, with the same slowness attached to someone else's signature.

Planets sitting in your second house

A planet in the second house does not predict wealth. It describes the temperature of the room.

PLANETIN THE SECOND HOUSE
SunIdentity is tangled up with earning. Providing is not a chore, it is a self-image.
MoonMoney is an emotional regulator. Comfort spending, and real distress when reserves run low.
☿︎ MercuryEarned through negotiation and information. Prone to overthinking small amounts.
♀︎ VenusEase with money and a taste for quality. The bill for that taste arrives later.
♂︎ MarsFast decisions, competitive earning, impulse as the recurring leak.
♃︎ JupiterConfidence and opportunity, and a persistent tendency to size things generously.
♄︎ SaturnScarcity as a starting assumption. Late but durable security, and chronic undercharging.
♅︎ UranusIrregular income by design. Stability feels like a cage, then the cage is missed.
♆︎ NeptuneBlurred numbers. Money is avoided, idealized, or quietly unaccounted for.
♇︎ PlutoMoney as power and control. Intense, secretive, all-in, hard to hold loosely.

An empty second house is not a problem. It means the story is told by the sign and its ruler instead, which is the more common case.

Transits to the second house

Transits are the part that has timing attached. A planet moving through your second house, or aspecting it, describes a changing climate around a pattern that does not change. See aspects and transits for the mechanics.

TRANSITWHAT IT TENDS TO BRING
♂︎ MarsDays, not months. Urgency, competitiveness, and the impulse purchase you can explain afterwards.
♀︎ VenusShort and pleasant. Spending feels justified because it genuinely is enjoyable.
♃︎ JupiterAbout a year. Appetite and opportunity both grow. So does the size of the mistake available.
♄︎ SaturnTwo to three years. Audit, restriction, and the bill for anything built carelessly. Also where durable structure gets made.
♅︎ UranusYears. Income arrangements get disrupted, sometimes by you, sometimes to you.
♆︎ NeptuneLong and vague. Clarity about money is genuinely harder. A bad decade to stop reading statements.
♇︎ PlutoLongest of all. What you value gets rebuilt from underneath, usually not comfortably.

None of these transits predicts an amount, a market move, or an outcome. They describe pressure and its likely shape. What you do under pressure is the part that is actually yours.

Second house, eighth house, tenth house

These three get confused constantly, and the distinction is the whole reason a money reading needs more than one house.

HOUSEWHOSE MONEY
SecondYours. Income you generate, things you own, what you value.
EighthShared. Debt, tax, inheritance, investment, and anything requiring someone else's signature.
TenthThe source. Career, reputation, and the public work that generates the income.

A strong tenth house with a difficult second describes someone who earns well and cannot hold it. The reverse describes someone quietly solvent in a job nobody notices. Read together, they stop contradicting each other. More on that in money and astrology.

What the second house cannot tell you

It cannot tell you an amount, a date you will be comfortable, which asset to buy, or what any market will do next. A chart has no access to your salary, your obligations, or your circumstances, and the sky does not set prices. If you want the boundary spelled out, we wrote it down in markets and astrology.

What it can do is describe a habit early enough to be useful. That is the entire proposition, and it is smaller and more honest than a prediction.

Know the weather. Keep what you earn. The second house is not a forecast of your finances. It is a decent mirror, held up before you act rather than after.
